In order to work with Facebook apps one needs to have an SSL certificate in order to have a secure hypertext transfer protocol (https). Facebook no longer allows apps to work on http and requires apps to utilize https.
I’ve been doing a bit of shopping around considering that I will be utilizing Linode (cloud hosting provider) for the VPS and I needed an affordable option for the SSL certificate. Looking back at my regular hosting provider, hostgator, I found that they get their certification through RapidSSL and GEOTrust. I wanted to go with GEOTrust but they no longer offered the $50/year option so I then decided to take a closer look at RapidSSL. On their site they have the following ten reasons why one should purchase an SSL cert from them:
- Value priced: A low-cost SSL certificate from a leading certificate authority.
- Get it fast:anytime, any day of the yearAutomated validation delivers your SSL Certificate to you in minutes without faxing documents.
- Easy to install24/7 Web support and step-by-step documentation give you a secure site in minutes.
- Reduce security alerts99+% browser support of root certificate means customer confidence won’t be lost to security alerts.
- Secured with strong encryptionUp to 256-bit SSL encryption protects transactions and confidential data in transmission.
- Delivered by a leading certificate authorityRapidSSL.com is a subsidiary of GeoTrust, a highly trusted, internationally recognized certificate authority.
- Reliable infrastructureThe GeoTrust global infrastructure has unmatched reliability.
- Expert supportExtensive online knowledge base available 24/7 with email support during business hours.
- Backed by a free warranty$10,000 warranty protects against mis-issuance.
- Money-back guaranteeYou have 30 days to try RapidSSL. If you don’t like it, get your money back.
With those reasons, especially the warranty value, who would not want to try them out? I think RapidSSL is the solution for the need of SSL for the project portion of this thesis. Really silly to gather all of these things just to work with social platforms however when you work with social you have to be prepared for the surprises that the audience serves back.
